The Post-Doctoral Fellow will support the Laboratory of Antigen and Adjuvant Research (LAAR) within the US Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) located in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP. 

The fellow will conduct studies to support a Phase 1 clinical trial on heroin vaccine. This position also involves developing fentanyl vaccine, combination heroin-HIV vaccine, and adjuvants.


  1. Conducts independent research and learns techniques required to conduct the research.

  2. Develops a thorough understanding of scientific literature relating to research topic.

  3. Publishes original research in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

  4. Presents research at scientific meetings.

  5. Effectively works with MHRP and external collaborators.

  6. Synthesizes and characterizes protein-hapten conjugates.

  7. Develop methodologies to analyze protein-hapten conjugates using capillary electrophoresis.

  8. Prepares Army Liposome Formulations (ALF) and develop other adjuvant formulations.

  9. Develop methodologies to analyze protein-hapten:adjuvant interactions using various biophysical characterization method.

  10. Develop novel methodologies for the analysis of protein-hapten:adjuvant of immune responses (humoral and/or cellular).

  11. Develop chemical assays and NMR methodologies to quantify QS-21.

  12. Synthesizes, purifies, and characterizes peptides.

  13. Develop methodologies to analyze peptide adjuvant interactions using various biophysical characterization method.

  14. Conducts immunogenicity and efficacy studies in mice and rats. 

  15. Performs ELISA and competition ELISA on animal sera.

  16. Maintain up to date, clear and accurate laboratory notebooks

  17. Calculates, plots and analyzes data.

  18. Follows all MHRP and WRAIR safety procedures.

  19. Completes required training in a timely manner.

  20. Serves on MHRP or WRAIR committees

  21. Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficient with Microsoft office and scientific graphing software, able to follow and develop standard laboratory procedures, has good communication skills both verbal and written, 

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Ph.D. (or equivalent) in chemistry or biochemistry 

Minimum Experience: Ph.D. (or equivalent) with 0 – 3 years postdoctoral work

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; handling various chemicals

Work Environment: Laboratory environment

Background: Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to pass a NACI background.
